The Oto Melara 127/54 Compact Gun Mount is a dual purpose, rapid fire, 5-inch gun mount intended as the main armament for frigates and destroyers.

The Mount is fully remote controlled, with automatic loading of 66 ready-to-fire rounds held in three loader drums, each capable of different ammunition, ready for immediate fire.

The loader drums are automatically fed, even with the gun in operation, through two hoists manually loaded in the ammunition magazine.

All available types of 5-inch ammunition can be fed, loaded, fuzed and fired.

The installation is completed by a gun control and distribution box.

Training and elevation are controlled by electric servo-systems, with plug-in modular electronics.

Tracking is continuous with the intervention of an obstacle contouring device.

An inverse slewing device is provided.

Feeding and loading systems are hydraulically operated through four self-contained hydraulic power units, two on and two off the Mount.

Reloading of the loader drums is accomplished by 4 to 8 handlers in the ship's ammunition magazine which can load the required ammunition even when the gun is firing.
